    Pronunciation

This was gonna go in the video game area but I realised it can be much wider.

Well anyway, do you have any issues with the pronunciations of...
    - Character names? (e.g. Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Dedede, Cthulu...)
    - Place names? (Gatwick, Canalave City, Hoenn...)
    - Franchise names? (Pokémon)
    - Any others I've forgotten?

Personally, I was once involved in a feud over the correct pronunciation of "Yoshi". Several people at my school said it as "Yoh-She" whilst I pronounced it as "Yo-She". Of course, I had Brawl to back me up (The announcer says Yo-She quite blatantly), but the argument persisted, with many saying that the correct British (and Japanese) pronunciation was Yoh-She, except for American Audiences.

I didn't like that person very much

Other ways I pronounce words- Wario is "War-Ee-Oh" not "Wah-Ree-Oh" to me, Waluigi is "Wall-Oo-Ee-Jee" and not "Wah-Loo-Ee-Jee", and I'm probably wrong there, and despite living in the north of England, I use the southern pronunciation of "Gat-Wick", not the quicker "Gaht-Wick". Oh, and it's "Poker-Mon" for me, not "Poke-Eee-Mon" or "Poke-eh-mon".

And then there is the whole "DEEDEEDEE!"/"DAYDAYDAY!" business.

I probably have a few more which I have forgotten, but you get the gist.

    Re: Pronunciation

Japanese language only has 5 vowel sounds, and they are all pronounced the same all the time ever. A (ah), I (ee), U (ooh), E (eh/ey, I don't know how to represent this sound), o (oh). Combining the sounds, such as ai, will give you the sound of the name for the letter I, but at it's heart, it's still what happens when you say ah-ee together. So Yoshi is always Yoshi, no matter what way you look at it.

Dedede's name? I thought it was Dehdehdeh when I first read it, but that sounded odd when pronounced aloud. Deydeydey sounds like saying "day to day" really fast. Deedeedee generally sounds the best, so that's what I go with.

I tend to pronounce Pokemon names my own way.

I don't really care so much about pronunciation. It's just a name. The point of names, really, is just to distinguish one character from another, without having to say "that fat penguin in a Santa suit with a hammer" all the time. How you pronounce it is a pretty silly thing to get worked up over, because, as long as it's recognizable who you are talking about - well, the name's done it's function, hasn't it?

    Re: Pronunciation

I don't pronounce Mario as Mar-ee-oh, I pronounce it Mah-ree-oh, which is weird because I pronounce Wario in the total reverse, Woar-ee-oh instead of Wah-ree-oh. And Wall-oo-ee-gee, not Wah-loo-ee-gee.
    Teh pokermons, not teh pokeymons.
Of course, being Southern, it's pronounced gr-arse, m-arse-ter, n-arse-tea, gl-arse, and so on, not the weird Northern accent which is all gr-ass and gl-ass and m-ass-ter and whatnot.

    Re: Pronunciation

Bass's name from Mega Man has pronounciation confusions. He is named after the musical term, but some people insist it is pronounced "Bass" like a fish, not "Base" like music. My little brother believes it is like the fish because of him saying they say it that way in the show...
My little brother also says Tomb(Tomb Raider) is "Toom" while I say it like bomb. Which is right?

Deifying all stereotypes you've heard about Canadians. Me, nor anyone else I know, has said "about" like "aboot"
I've lived in Canada my whole life and never heard it said like that outside of stupid jokes made by people from the US.

The "toom" The "b" is silent, just like how the p is in pterodactyl, or pnemonia ofr instance.
Also, I've always been confused on Giygas, is it Guy-Gis, or Gig-as?
Also, I hate the random amount of space that is left when I quote.

I pronounce the word "resourceful" so-called 'funny' how my sister says. She says I'm pronouncing it wrong.

I pronounce it "ruh-zors-fuhl" and she says I pronounce it wrong.

    Re: Pronunciation

It's supposed to be with a 'dental fricative' (which is a fancy word for that dvvvffffvv sound that certain 'th's make), but let's face it, it's pronounced 'duh' by all sensible people.

    Re: Pronunciation

I know you're supposed to pronounce Mario as "Mah-rio" in this part of the world but too many American gaming videos on the Internet got to me. Hm.

Anyway. The capitals mean stress on that syllable.

"Yoshi" - "YOE-she". As in the words "yoga" and "she".

Olimar - "OLL-ih-mar", as in "olive", "imp" and "martini".

Giygas - "GUY-gss" . Don't know how to spell that second syllable. Try to pronounce it with no vowel, but if there was a vowel, it'd be an A. Uh, if that makes sense.

    Katamari - "CAT-a-mar-ee".

Onett - "ON-ett" As in, "on" and "ett". I don't use the "one" sound as in the number.

Kokiri - "koe-KEER-ee" As in "Coke", "ear", and "ee".

    Kakariko - "kah-kh-REE-koe"

"Hylia" - "HYE-Leea" As in "Hi" (like the greeting) and "Lee" and "ah"

I think my pronunciations of Goron, Zora and Deku might be wrong, but it's how I've always called them. So... :

    Goron - "GOE-ron"
    Zora - "ZOE-rah"
    Deku - "DAY-ku". Sometimes "DEE-ku". I don't know, I guess I switch between them.

If any of this doesn't make sense, I could RECORD MICROPHONE myself saying stuff. If you want.

    Re: Pronunciation

    Hmm... For me it is:
    Goron - "Gore-On"
Zora - "Zor-ah" (Zor as in Gore with a Z)
    Deku - "Deh-Ku"

And ever since I learnt the way to say Arceus is "Ar-kay-us" as in Archaic with an us, I've always pronounced it like that in my head. It sounds awesome. :P

Also- Cait Sith ISN'T Kate Sith, apparently. It's Ket Shee or something weird like that. And I thought "bass" like the fish could also be music related? Unless I've always been reading it wrong.

And another amusing anecdote- I was once watching a gaming TV show which wasn't very good, when they reviewed Metroid Prime 2. What did they call Samus?

    "Shame-us".

Apparently Samus is Irish now. :P

EVERYTHING I KNOW IS A LIE That actually makes a lot of sense, but I've always called it "Guy Giss". I remember hearing a voice say that, too.

    Re: Pronunciation

Over here, pronouncing Arceus 'Ar-se-us' would be silly, because, you know - arse.

Something I find interesting is the pronounciation of 't's in the local accent. Essentially, in words like 'Katie' or 'waitress', the 't' is missed out, producing 'kay-ee' or 'way-ress'. But it's not like the 't's disappeared entirely - it's called, apparently, a 'glottal stop'. And yes, that is pronounced 'gloh-ahl'.

Probably due to Granary in TF2. (Hehe, I made a rhyme.)

    I pronounce Arceus as Ar-key-us. There's Seh-leb-ee (Celebi), Rah-ta-ta (Rattata).
Gore-on, Zor-ah, Deck-oo, High-lee-an, Coke-ear-ee, and Tw-eye-lie for Goron, Zora, Deku, Hylian, Kokiri and Twili.

    Re: Pronunciation

I think yours are all correct, Darky, except Arceus and maybe Kokiri (I say it with a much more suggestive first sylable so most likely you're right)

But out of interest, how do I pronounce Touhou?

I keep saying it in my head as "Too-Hoo", but chances are I'm way off. :P

    I also have "Shin Meg-ami Ten-Say" and "Oh-Kah-Me".
