    Re: Advertisement Issues Thread

I went to the home page, saw today's update, went to the previous one with the Previous button, then clicked "Next", and as the page was loading another tab spontaneously opened and redirected about 10 times before bringing me to this:

It took about 7 or 8 minutes to get to the final URL.

EDIT: When I clicked on the forum button today, a new tab opened as well, the URL of which started with statcounter.com. I think the Keenspot people should start, you know, GETTING RID OF THOSE SORTS OF THINGS.
They often have viruses as well.

Pictures of these ads would be nice, either way, to help pinpoint their source.
Thank you, Eltro, but I'm well aware of how to take a screenshot/printscreen/screencap or whatever you want to call it. I had to use my mom's laptop for the weekend, which has no print screen button, among other things. The closest thing is the Snip tool, but that's just annoying to use. I'm back on my home computer, now, so I will see if I can get a pic of the ad.

I was wondering whether the pop-up ads are intended to be here, they are quite annoying. Most of them only pop up and do not load, but I just got this one to load.

    Re: Advertisement Issues Thread

Yeah, I've noticed a pop-up ad twice on BitF since we started with Keenspot (which, considering that it's my home page and we've been on Keenspot for about two months, isn't a LOT but...). Pop-ups were definitely not part of the agreement so I'll contact them today about that and see what can be done.

The risque comic linked above in the Keenspot Box is something I haven't seen personally though. For quite awhile, the box for me has been Count Your Sheep, one of the family-friendly comics linked to on the drop-down box. If I had to guess, it was probably a brief snafu with something getting through the cracks momentarily rather than a more pervasive problem. If it continues to pop up though, that'll be worth looking into.

I- I saw the same online dating Ad I reported some days after I came to the forums!
I couldn't save the page (My dad was fixing the data box), but.... It had some yucky images. I saw very nice looking lady, but forever put away my respect for her by aiming the camera at the wrong angle.
    Thank you.

Heya! Chris Crosby from Keenspot here. We most definitely do NOT allow pop-ups or audio ads. We had a report of a pop-up earlier, and are in the process of dropping an ad provider because of it. They've been a decent advertiser in the past, but recently they've allowed through some bad ads so we won't be using them again.

With regards to the WAYWARD SONS ad, that seems to be a glitch in our internal ad server, we're looking into it.

Thanks guys, keep the reports coming! The more information we have, the easier it is to track down and kill the ads that shouldn't be running.

    Re: Advertisement Issues Thread

So I got an email today from a reader describing an intrusive ad that covered up much of the page and couldn't be X'd out of (here's an excerpt):

"Basically, while trying to read the blog post about the latest strip (the "Overgrowth" one), my webpage was taken over by an ad about some cell phone or palm-pilot. I honestly wasn't paying that much attention to the ad and more attention to the fact that it was animated, in the CENTER of the screen, I had no option to "make it go away" with a little X-mark in the corner and was instead forced to watch it try and explain the myriad features it offers and simply hope that it would eventually go away so I could continue doing what I wanted and was actually trying to do."

Has anyone else had a problem similar to this? Having the ads be unobtrusive is important to me, and this sounds like one of the "bad ads" that Chris Crosby was mentioning. It seems advertisements like this are few and far between, thankfully, but they shouldn't be there at all, so it helps to know when they're showing up.

EDIT: Oh, while I'm here, Chris--I remember you mentioning that you guys wanted to do more appropriate ads for BitF (and other "Keenspot Kids" comics) that BitF readers might be more interested in. The Pokemon header at the top of the page is a great start, but is there any chance that the other ads could follow suit one day? Thanks!

Yep. A friend of mine told me about seeing this ad too. If his memory serves, it was a Blackberry ad. Same problem with no 'X' to close it.

(I confirmed with him that he did not send you the email about it.)

I saw the exact same ad yesterday...
Is it me, or have there been more inappropriate ads since the move to Keenspot?
    Thank you.

    Couple thoughts:

    1. I didn't even know tobacco advertising was legal online.

    2. I find it very amusing that a kid friendly site has an advertisement for tobacco of all things.

Well when you think about it, #2 makes plenty of sense on the side of the tobacco companies as they want to start the habit in younger people, grow a larger market and create that dependency for a long time to go.

Of course, when you look at the side of the website ad host... the questions begin to pile up. Warning: questions may cause cancer of the brain.

Just now I saw a "You have 1 unread message(s)!" ad on the site.

Please come and help Pokemon Topaz! Spriters would be helpful.

Not included here are the absolutely irrelevant ads, like ones for retirement vacations. I think the "LIQUOR," "MEET SINGLES," and "Vaguely Sexualized Game Advertisement" ones are enough.

I want to bring this up again because with the recent reports I'm wondering how this is going.

Is there any progress on that front, or did something go wrong? Did this manage to slip by the censors?

    Well, I just got a pop-up ad.
It was a Groupon ad that said "Save up to 90% today" with a sub sandwich on it.

EDIT: Also, while checking the site again I saw the chewing tobacco ad as the header and footer. I'm really not sure if the ad supporters are reliable yet...

I really haven't had much of these current problems with ads.

The worst I saw was a ad for Toyota, but hey, adults read this comic too.
