    Mass Sexual Assaults in Germany

More than 90 women have reported attacks that included sexual assaults, thefts and at least one rape in Cologne, Germany.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35237173

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has voiced outrage over the sexual assaults and thefts that male gangs inflicted on women in Cologne on New Year's Eve.

Women have made at least 90 criminal complaints to police about the harassment by gangs at Cologne's main railway station on Thursday night.

The scale of the attacks has shocked Germany. About 1,000 drunk and aggressive young men were involved.

Witnesses and police said the men were of Arab or North African appearance.

Mrs Merkel called Cologne's mayor Henriette Reker on Tuesday and "expressed her outrage over these disgusting attacks and sexual assaults".
Similar attacks happened in other German cities, at least Hamburg and Stuttgart.

Meanwhile, the Wikipedia article about the sexual assaults reads like a news blog written by white genocide scaremongers.

It's surely interesting how the focus of the article is entirely on ethnicity and refugees (and the undue weight given to a dumb conspiracy theory) and not at all on gender.

The Wikipedia article looks much more neutral now, although the focus is still on the ethnicity and religion of refugees.

Re: Mass Sexual Assaults in Germany

Some of the low-hanging fruit has been tackled, like the blatant misrepresentation of The Australian on the status of several rapists elsewhere who are apparently Syrian (seriously, what a wingnut must someone be to misconstrue that Murdoch rag?). But a lot of the more contentious material is still thinly sourced, mostly depending on the conservative papers Die Welt and Bild. For fate's sake, the German version is a lot more neutral, despite many of the more lurid claims actually coming from German sources and a problem of undue weight on ethnic background and status still remaining (of course, that is all hard to check).

Here is an article from the Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...ttacks-germany

There were three different demonstrations held in Cologne: one by a women's group, another by a neo-Nazi group, and another by an anti-fascist group.

Re: Mass Sexual Assaults in Germany

The total number of cases - in Cologne alone - has risen to over 500.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35277249

The number of criminal cases committed during new year celebrations in the German city of Cologne has risen to 516 - 40% of which relate to sexual assault, police in the city say.

The figures are a big increase from the 379 cases police reported on Saturday.

Asylum seekers and illegal migrants from North Africa comprise the majority of suspects, police say.

The crime spree led to criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-door immigration policy.

That has resulted in 1.1 million asylum seekers going to Germany throughout 2015.
The criticism referred to above is another confirmation of racists' utter inability to get anything at all right. Merkel's policy only applies to asylum seekers and their relatives who are Syrian nationals. It doesn't apply to North African refugees, of whom hardly any are Syrian nationals, and what I have read so far suggests that most identified suspects came from Morocco and Algeria. Sure, perhaps the proportion of Syrians or even recent refugees from Syria among the attackers will rise in future figures, but as it stands the attacks cannot be linked to the Merkel cabinet's actions towards Syrian asylum seekers. See: http://www.euractiv.com/sections/glo...efugees-317065

Then of course there's the dishonest logic that any refugee from country X must represent the wider class of refugees, people from X or refugees from X, while people who are the societal default are purely individual, their actions having no bearing on their ethnicity or class.

A British woman visiting Cologne said fireworks had been thrown at her group by men who spoke neither German nor English. "They were trying to hug us, kiss us. One man stole my friend's bag," she told the BBC.

Re: Mass Sexual Assaults in Germany

The total number of reported cases has risen further, most suspects appear to be relatively recent entrants from Morocco and Tunisia who hope to receive permanent asylum in Germany or will try to stay without a legal status. That they would get legal permanent settlement there is a delusion, but German registration is messy enough for them to be able to stay quite a while longer. (As an indication of how rickety the German registration system is, there have been more entries in their databases than there were people entering the European Union according to the most reliable organisations.)

According to Pro Asyl, it is absurd that Afghan refugees still have to wait months for their requests to be processed. Instead of the formal examination as part of the Dublin system, which is used to establish who is responsible for processing the application, Afghans and Iraqis also need a “thorough examination of their asylum applications,” Burkhardt said.

The NGO official added that now is the time to “make the EU-wide population aware that the protection of refugees” is the task at hand. “The values of European civilisation are at stake,” Burkhardt said. A “Europe surrounded by fences will not work.”

Re: Mass Sexual Assaults in Germany

Yes, Germany's administrative procedures are clogged up compared to other countries. In part that has to do with the sheer numbers, but there is also endemic misregistration and overregistration of refugees. That makes the number of refugees in Germany seem larger than it is (official German numbers initially exceeded the numbers of refugees who had entered Europe, which is of course impossible (European "refugees" weren't that numerous)).

Also relevant context is that the AfD political party has claimed police should be able to shoot refugees. ECR have been busy getting the party's delegation to the European Parliament to leave their group.

    https://euobserver.com/migration/132100

German anti-immigrant and eurosceptic party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has found itself cornered over comments on shooting refugees who try to cross the border illegally.

On Saturday (30 January), regional daily Mannheimer Morgen published an interview with AfD chairperson Frauke Petry, to discuss her plan for “comprehensive checks” on the German-Austrian border to prevent unregistered refugees from coming in.

She said police must “prevent illegal border crossings, if necessary also by using firearms”, noting that it was “in the law”.

“No policeman wants to shoot at refugees. I don't want that. But the use of firearms is part of the last resort," she said, adding that it was crucial “not to let it come that far”.

It wasn’t the first time an AfD member discussed the use of firearms to prevent border crossings.
