    A Fiend In Need

    Beverly Hills, California
    Present Day

On any other morning, Snapdragon Yamaguchi - pop starlet, model, and actress - would've been savouring a late breakfast, or perhaps swimming a lap or two in the complex’s indoor pool. As it was, though, she had neither of those luxuries. Instead she was pacing tightly around the dining room of her penthouse, clearly fuming. And she wasn't alone.

"Are you &&&&ing with me?" Her tone was rough, completely at odds with the bubbly idol persona she usually adopted in public. "First you tell me that magic is real, and now I'm supposed to believe that my life is in danger because of it? That’s just too damn much."

"Sorry, darlin'. That's just the way it is." The reply came from a man perched on a stool by the kitchen counter. He was an unusual visitor, not least because of the fact that his face was curiously ageless, and he could have been anywhere between eighteen and eighty years old. The more unsettling thing was the sort of subtle wrongness which clung to him, which was hard to put into words; it could best be described as an unshakeable sense that he didn't belong in this world. "The Fiends' Court will be after you for sure, and I wouldn't be too optimistic about the Magicians' Court either."

"This is nuts," the girl said flatly, cutting to the point. "And I don't understand any of it."

"Best get someone to explain it to you, then. It'd be an awful shame for you to die without realising just what you've stumbled into."

It sank in, then, that he didn't sound like he was joking.

"Damn," she said, trying to keep her tone light. "That's the first and last time I try to help someone, then, if this is what it gets me."

"Oh, it won't be all bad." The man showed his teeth in a fashion which she wasn't stupid enough to call a smile. "I promise."

With that, he vanished from sight. Left on her own, she collapsed onto a chair. Her mind raced frantically, left with more questions than answers, and now with a mounting sense that she was in serious trouble. She liked to think she was no stranger to risk, but even this was way out of her depth.

"Well, &&&&," she muttered. "I'm going to need bodyguards."

    A Fiend In Need

Magic exists, of course, as Snapdragon Yamaguchi discovered the hard way; most people just don't know about it. Mages tend to be taught by other mages, because keeping its existence on the down-low is their highest priority. It helps that magic tends to run in families, but sometimes the child of a normal family will be born with powers, which manifest around puberty. In this case, a more senior practitioner will usually detect their mana, then seek them out and teach them how to control it, but it’s also entirely possible for a potential magic-user to go their whole lives without realising their abilities. By and large, a mage’s power levels are higher than those of a highly trained human, but not markedly so: a magical assassin would beat a mundane one nine times out of ten, but that of course depends on individual skill as much as anything.

Magic works like a pyramid: mages can do a wide variety of low-level magic, but tend to have a particular field of specialty centred around a concept, with which they can do greater things. This can be as simple as an element (for example, ice magic) or something more abstract and nebulous (such as luck). Any truly great magic - that is, the bending of reality on a more significant level, which is very roughly beyond what you'd be able to do by mundane methods over a longer period of time - comes at the cost of incredible physical exhaustion, if not actual damage, roughly proportional to the amount by which you flouted the established rules of the world. Particularly ambitious mages have been known to go blind, lose function in their limbs, or even die in the process of weaving an especially complex spell; however, this was in exchange for feats of magic which could only be called miracles.

Most mages owe their allegiance to the Magicians' Court, whether explicitly or by default. This body governs the rules of magic and makes sure it's kept secret at all costs; it holds trials for those who transgress, and its headquarters also serve as a safe haven for any practitioner of magic should they need it. The Magicians' Court is governed by a body of seven mages, including its head. Three of the seats are held by members of particularly ancient and distinguished families: Smythington-Clay, von Kaube, and Konoe. Another three are decided by a vote every seven years, although the slow-moving nature of the political culture means that these don't often change hands either. And the job of head of the Court is a lifetime position; in the wake of a leader's death, mages flock to headquarters and hold a vote. Of course, the length of a lifetime varies... especially because intrigue is endemic. The current leader of the Magicians' Court is Umberto Dupont, from a family almost as ancient as the three with permanent seats, and the fifth of his line to hold the title in the last two centuries. However, he's quite old, and it's been impossible to quash the rumour mill about who his possible successor could be.

In opposition stands the Fiends' Court, which began as a splinter group and has since grown in strength. While its mortal constituents are far fewer, their powers have been bolstered by their unholy masters in exchange for their cooperation. Its head is a demon with an unknown name, who delegates most of the business of governing to the most senior of those who have contracted with them, a person known only as Moloch. It's unknown whether or not the same Moloch has reigned for the entire existence of the Fiends' Court, or if it passes from mage to mage like a codename. There are very few truly freelance mages, although many of those affiliated to one faction or the other only pay lip service to their Court; this is more common among advocates of the Magicians' than the Fiends', simply because of the nature of each.

You'll take the role of one of Snapdragon's newly hired mage bodyguards, of which there are no more than five. You've been sought out personally, largely because you're renowned for having no particular ties to either of the Courts. The job may or may not wind up being high-risk, but at least you're guaranteed to be paid well.

    ~

Whew, that was a lot of information. If you’re still here, thanks for reading! Here’s the character sheet you’ll need to fill out if you’ll want to apply. I’ll be choosing anywhere between three and five participants by the end of the month, so get on that if you're interested.

He were not hanged. He would not answer aye or nay to his indictment; for if he denied the charge they'd hang him surely, and auction out his property. So he stand mute, and died Christian under the law. And so his sons will have his farm. It is the law, for he could not be con-demned a wizard without he answer the indictment, aye or nay... Great stones they lay upon his chest until he plead aye or nay. They say he give them but two words. "More weight," he says. And died.

    Re: A Fiend In Need

    Name: Joseph Vanderbeak

Appearance: A bit young, among his mid-twenties, with dark, stormy brown eyes. Thin, but not un-healthily so, about 5'11". His hair seems to match his eyes, also dark brown, with little specks of gray. His hair is a bit shaggy, but he tries to make sure it's not ridiculously messed up. Usually wears a small metal necklace with a yellow stone in it, which seems to disrupt his other clothes, which are a brown leather jacket, white shirt, and blue jeans. Not actually very intimidating, but that helps him quite a bit. He always seems to have a bit of a mischevious grin on his face, like he's about to whip out a bad pun that he thinks is genius.

Personality: A big fan of puns. Usually, if he starts telling a few, he can't stop. This tends to push away some people, because his puns tend to be awful. However, when there is work to be done, or he's focusing on something, he gets quite serious, and if someone messes with him when he's like this, they might be quite shocked at what he'll do, as you shall see. Overall, he's pretty happy-go-lucky. He enjoys people's company, and loves making people laugh, although his puns don't usually do that for him. He loves reading, and being a Mage, that can be a big help when looking for a new spell or trick.

Backstory: Joseph was trained at a young age. His master, Larry Vanderbeak, not an intimidating name, but one of the oldest and most powerful mages of his family, taught him everything he knew. Just about every Mage in his family was an Earth specialist, but he loved Electric magic. As Joseph grew in his training, his favorite pastime was to sneak up on someone and give them a nasty static shock. Joseph, although a very powerful Mage, never decided on joining either of the Courts. He wasn't a fan of working for a demon, but he didn't always want to follow all the rules. He loved messing with other people walking by, but he never did anything that could seriously injure them. He's been looking for a job where he could really use his skill, and then he heard about this.

Magic: He pretty much taps into every element you can think of, but he loves Electric magic. He was always interested how you could flash a lighting bolt in every direction, and then blast forward, frying your enemy. He can also mess with people's electrical impulse in their brain, which can allow him to induce intense pain in their nervous system, or make their brain tell their body to do something, specifically making the hand slap the face over and over again. The stone he where's can boost his electric magic, but if he uses too much in one battle, it could shatter. Even though he wishes electricity can solve everything, he knows to get some fire, ice, air, etc magic so he won't be useless if he came against some rock creature (you'd be surprised what he runs into). Not only does he dabble in all of the elements, but he can create elemental barriers. These barriers make the specific element weaker, or even not effective at all. If he set up an Earth barrier, earth attacks would be much weaker, and weak Earth spells wouldn't do anything at all. However, this is quite strenuous. If Joseph uses one elemental barrier on himself, or one person, he gets a bit groggy, but still operational. If he uses 2 elements on himself, another person, or one element on a group of people, he'll pass out. If he uses 3 elements on himself, someone else, or 2 or more elements on a group, it begins to damage his body.

    Re: A Fiend In Need

    Name:David Al'Mandragon

Description: 6' 2", a bit thin, but still has a bit of bulk to him. He has eyes that are blue like the sea, but there's a fire inside of them, warning you to stay away. He has jet black hair, which matches with his dark personality, and wears a grey shirt with a black jacket and pants. He's more on the serious side, but he'll sometimes laugh at weird things. He's pretty agile, but he think' he's smaller than he is, so he might bump his head against the ceiling every once in awhile. He doesn't talk unless he's addressed to, because even though he has an inner fire, he's also a bit shy. When he meets new people, he's not sure how to act, so he keeps to himself. He's a fan of music, thievery, and swordplay. He doesn't have health problems, but he does have an old scar going across his left rib cage.

Backstory: He came from a non-magic family. A farming family, in fact. When he was working the fields one day, he accidentally lit some of the field on fire, with his own hand! He tried to control his power, but failed, and killed his family in the process. Filled with guilt, he turned quite dark, and started robbing others. He once tried to rob a caravan full of gold, but a Mage came up and slashed his left rib, teaching him a lesson about attacking other mages. After that, David had no trust for either Courts. He entered deep depression, going from tavern to tavern, when an old Mage came to him and trained him to control his powers. One day, a group of mages burst into the old man's quarters and killed him, saying he was a part of the Fiend's Court. David lashed out on these mages, killing all of them. When he was facing the last one, the Mage used a light blast on David. He dodged most of the attack, but was hit in the eyes, temporarily blinding him. He blindly attacked the Mage and killed him, then sat down and waited for the blindness to go away. When he could see again, he could actually see more than other people could. He could see people's past actions, one of his favorite's is watching them mess up in the past, there personality, but only at times.

Magic: David mainly leans on Earth and Fire magic, he can use a bit of light magic and creates a sword made of light to send rapid surges of slashing light attacks at enemies. He also uses some dark magic to help him with stealth and mind altering. If the person you're robbing doesn't see you coming, their easier to rob. As a final resort he combines his magical knowledge to make a black avatar that fights for him and is very deadly and hard to kill, resulting in creating the avatar Daniel faints. His eye sight also comes with a interesting magical attribute. It gives him the ability to see the 'weaving' of the magic. Along with seeing them he can mess with them, disable them and deflect them but it doesn't come without repercussions. Disabling them is as hard and exhausting as doing major magic. Simply deflecting takes as much energy as the user used to cast, it also if he knows the magic well it doesn't cost as much mana to mess with them as magic he doesn't know well which takes more mana. Light magic is the easiest and barely takes any because of the spell that gave him his sight.
