    Exclamation EarthBound thread

Most pople don't know it but EarthBound is another one of Shigeru's lost masterpiece. This rpg is suppose to be based between the late 50's and the early 60's. It's about an 11 year old preteen named Ness whose avdenture began when he checked out the meteorite that crash landed in his hometown Onett 10 years from the future.

    Re: EarthBound thread

EarthBound/Mother is probably currently the most under-rated series Nintendo has. Or rather, the most under-rated one they don't have, judging from the cold shoulder it's getting.

Also, it's (frustratingly, at times) the only RPG that comes to mind with the main character as a defensive fighter instead of a more balanced or outright offensive one (those first few areas are difficult because of Ness' less-than-practical means of attack, and, for a while after you get her, Paula's low level).
Even though you can’t see God, you can be sure He’s there and He’s watching you. He’s like a ninja.

    Re: EarthBound thread

I love Earthbound, and I got pretty far into it. I like the little jokes they throw at you, like this segment from Onett's game arcade.
(Note: This is just a generalization, not what they actually said)
"Hey kid, you wanna join the Sharks?"
    Ness says 'Yes'
    "Go beat EarthBound first!"

The bosses were unique and interesting, the RPG gameplay was completely different from most RPGs, the characters were diverse and had great personalities, and the main villain is epic. The game looks easy at first, but is actually very challenging and puzzling. The various locations were well-thought-out, as well as the storyline. Overall, I love this game.

Unfortunately, I can't beat Ness's Nightmare. Tips, anybody?

EarthBound is excellent. No, the most excellent.

I think one of my favourite moments in all of video games is in the hotel in Mother 3, where you can listen in through the door on what these two people are saying. It's not exposition. It's not a plot point, It's not a game hint. It's not anything of the sort. It's just...two guys having a light chat. It feels so realistic and friendly.

I find that EB gets better over time, while the opposite is usually true for me for most other games. It's a very charming game, and has really stuck with me over the years.

I want to like Earthbound, I really do and I give props that is a Rockin game, but I can't get into it because it was shoved down my throats as the be all end all game. I mean It certainly is good, It's just that I can't get into it sadly.

Though I am trying too atleast.

I wouldn't call the series 'underrated' so much as 'underplayed', seeing how only M2 made it to US and all the constant praise it gets from it fans, not to mention how much it costs online.
Played all three of them from start to finish on emu, havent picked it up ever since.

Considered going on a second playthrough, preferably trying out the 'Hard Mode' that the tranlation team snuck into M3.
    Maybe just once.

    Re: EarthBound thread

Earthbound is one of the few RPGs that I cared to play and I'm a (proud) owner of MOTHER 2. Sadly I can't play it because I don't have a modded SNES or a Freeloader. It's one of my favorite game series together with Contra, Panel De Pon, F-Zero and Castlevania (both, post- and pre-Symphony of the Night).

During my Earthbound playthrough I actually managed to get one of the 1/128 items, well, not the one I was hoping for. I was trying to Poo's Sword of Kings but got a Psi Caramel instead. When I later found out that the caramels are also a rare drop, I didn't know how to feel, happy or angry.

I'm one of the few people who like the very first game the most. I'm not saying that the others are bad, not at all. Maybe I like level grinding. Anyway, I would rank them:
    MOTHER > MOTHER 2 > MOTHER 1+2 > MOTHER 3
Spoiler: 3DS code and other stuff

    Re: EarthBound thread

Earthbound isn't on the wii shop channel for some legal reasons. If they did put it on the shop channel, then there was a good chance that they were going to get face a lawsuit regarding copyright issues. Mainly due to the constant pop culture references. There's more things to it than that and don't feel like writing an essay, so here is the article which is 100 times better than this part of my post. Read more here: http://starmen.net/ebvc/

But Earthbound is indeed a good game in my eyes, yes I do think the fans say it's better than it is but I can honestly say I liked Earthbound BEFORE it was cool. (Yeah, I'm that old) I always find myself amused whenever I play through this game, and I always discover new things every playthrough. Although I'd love an english (re?)release, I'll just hook up the old SNES and play it.

I'd definately recommend this game to anyone who wants to try something different.
    And what's this?

    ...?

And yet MOTHER took place in the 80s. How could it's sequel be placed 20 years before?

What level are you? I remember they were between late 50s and early 60s when I crossed Magicant, so I recommend either that or higher.

    "In the year 199X"

Earthbound is great, I need to go back and beat it sometime. It's hilarious, the story's interesting, and everything is done with a creative touch.
I like Mother 3 more, but that may just be because I've played it all the way through

Starstorm has a defined name. Rockin' and Love don't.

Well, not really, those are still the official names of those PSI powers, just as Ness, Paula, Jeff, Poo, and King are the official names of the cast (and Ness's dog).

I'd guess the reason Lucas and Ness got Starstorm is because it's easier to represent visually than the more abstract Rockin'/Love.

Lucas' Up A is PK Love. He goes through the same motion as he does when he pulls out a needle.

    Re: EarthBound thread

Ah, the up-smash. Yeah, I've always liked the Needle Pull move. I think PK Love sort of merges its way into a lot of Lucas's attacks, based solely on the PSI "energy" that he radiates when he attacks (generally yellow and blue geometric shapes).

I love this game. Just love it.
But I don't feel like going back to the desert just to kill some moles...I hate deserts.
But I DID love the Master Belch battle and everything beforehand.
