    SSB4 News Thread

With the oncoming approach of the new Smash Brothers game, naturally, hype will be building up and we'll be seeing more and more news regarding the project. This topic is meant to cover the news of the game as time goes on.

To start things off, earlier this morning, a statement was issued from Sakurai regarding criticism of the netplay in Brawl, but also the way players played in Brawl's online to begin with. An excerpt, if you will:

“The idea of Brawl’s ’carefree brawling’ motto was to get rid of as many restraints as possible and allow people to choose whatever play approach they liked,” [Sakurai] wrote. “I’d like people to take some freer approaches with their gameplay, but the sort of battle style you describe in your letter is not interesting or fun. That’s why I’ll probably be thinking of a way to deal with that in the next game.

So what does this mean for SSB4? According to the letter - that aforementioned criticism - a producer tried playing Brawl's netplay and did not have much fun with it due to the fact that the players were not making any move at all. Every single one of them was playing the waiting game, and this goes straight into something I've been mentioning for a while: Brawl does not reward you very much for offense.

This does, of course, raise the question - how would Sakurai want to change the game mechanics so it's not as boring? If this is to be believed at face value, this means that Sakurai actually recognizes that there are problems to fix on Brawl, but that raises the next question: is he aware of the same flaws about Brawl that others bring up, or does he have his own viewpoint on what's "flawed" about it?

It's hard to say--reading the guy's letter first and then Sakurai's reply, it sounds like Sak wants the game to be more dynamic than the defense-oriented style of competitive play. He seems to be a fan of items, as well as the general semi-unpredictable nature of dynamic stages, so we might see more of that in the next game? I dunno. Personally, I really like those elements of SSB, so I'd be fine seeing more of them, as long as the game still has plenty of options.

The real problem with SSBB's online is the lag. They need to iron that out, and give the game as many options online as it has offline.

On a side note, props on using the phrase "raises the question" rather than the oft-misused "begs the question."

Dynamic play is really the cincher here, because despite what I can see was done with Brawl to make it easier to pick up, too much was dumbed down to make defensive play the superior option overall. Players adapted to that, and this only rewards roll/dodge spammers move than they already were in the past. Sure, you could have worked around it in the past, but it's harder to work around in Brawl, going back to that point about offense being hardly rewarding in Brawl.

Something I enjoy about Smash is the amount of options available to the player. I'm not even talking competitively, I'm talking in terms of things like single player (classic, all-star, break the targets, events), items, special modes, and stages to play on. Variety is the spice of life, but adding too many things for the sake of having them can easily be a course in frustration. The spike in Rumble Falls comes right out as an easy contender for one such example. The fan comes out as another.

I see no reason against it being both as long as discussion remains constructive and civil.

    Re: SSB4 News Thread

Oh thank goodness you made this thread, Eltrotraw! I was actually thinking about where to post what you posted!

Anyway, I used to be one of those "I'm all for items and playing on whatever stages", but then I realized, in trying to enforce that line of of thinking, I became no better then the ones trying to enforce competitive play! And really, if you think it's more fun to play on Final Destination with no items, I have no right to say otherwise. You can't really dictate how to "enjoy" something, because people enjoy things for different reasons. See, this is one of my major issues with Sakurai, it's that he keeps insisting that his games should be played a certain way, and that any kind of criticism against the game is just someone not understanding or "not playing it right", which I find incredibly arrogant.

And it's not like I'm one of those people who thinks Brawl is unplayable because it has tripping in it, but I feel like forcing that kind of thing into a game is just one big middle finger to those who prefer playing it the other way. Not to mention, the items need to actually REWARD the player that gets to them and not backfire against them, like with the Timer and the Lightning Bolt. I can KIND of tolerate the PokeBall because even though there's a chance of getting Goldeen, at least it doesn't handicap you the way the Timer and the Lightning Bolt does. I never really liked that about the Hammer or Golden Hammer either, but then again, those items were so ridiculously overpowered that... You know, now that I think about it, it's kind of the same deal. Yeah, if you reach the item first, you should be the winner. I fail to see how adding a "oh, you might get the advantage or it could backfire, be careful, ho ho ho!" to the items increases the "fun" value. I mean, if you mess up, that's on you, but if you pick up an item and it messes you up, that's just a straight up dick move!

Sorry, I didn't mean to go on a ran like that. Anyway, I wish Sakurai would be a BIT more open-minded. Though my sympathies go towards that one player who isn't having fun playing online.

Just based on what kinds of changes we saw from Melee to Brawl and his general attitude on it, I'm guessing he has his own idea about this... We're as likely to see actual balance fixes that reward offensive gameplay as we are to see mandatory items in online matches.

I'm iffy on what to expect. It would be nice if they make some announcements about what's changing between now and its eventual release, but we'll just have to see.

    Re: SSB4 News Thread

I actually saw this on a gaming new site before, and a lot of the comments were commending Sakurai for promoting the casual playstyle - which is putting words in his mouth, since his statement is fairly vague.

Either way, this was my response:
That's not why online Brawl isn't fun. Brawl isn't fun online because the system is terrible. Laggy and slow, making it hard to play competitively or casually. It shouldn't require everyone in your house to be offline for, at most, a decent connection to play online.

Also, if he supports all gameplay styles by trying "to get rid of as many restraints as possible and allow people to choose whatever play they liked," then why would he continue to have it so that you can only have 4-person FFAs with items on when playing random. Why not let the competitive people play 1v1 no items when playing random people, rather than requiring them to go online and find opponents that they have to exchange FCs with, and then delete it right after because of the small friend roster.

His words and his actions are contradictory if that's true.

And as a competitive player, just because the game isn't wacky and hectic as Brawl with items is, doesn't mean it's not fun. I find it more enjoyable than hectic Smash.
Don't force your views of how the game "should" be played onto other people.

    Re: SSB4 News Thread

I had a lot of fun hyping Brawl. In retrospect, it's actually ridiculous how obsessed I was. But there was something magical about my 13-year-old self waking up to a Dojo update before I discussed it with my friend on the way to school. I ended up learning such an absurd amount about the game, constantly reading the Gamefaqs topics and finding the easter eggs in whatever short gameplay clips were revealed. In a way, the hype was more fun than the game itself.

But now I wanna try the opposite approach. What if I don't watch a single trailer before this game comes out? What if I boot up the game day 1 and can be awed by the character select screen alone? What if when the Challenger Approaching silhouette appears, I actually have to figure out for myself who it is? I think I'd be blown away.

The main problem is just that I'm not sure how to block out new information for something as popular as Super Smash Bros. How can I keep up with other gaming news without exposing myself to this one? Apparently news is gonna start coming in this June, so I don't have a whole lot of time to figure something out.

Not sure if this is really considered news, but according to this: http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/sm...ntendo-direct/ , Smash 4 is gonna be revealed before Nintendo's E3 event at a pre-E3 Nintendo Direct along with some other titles. Perhaps to build up hype for bigger reveals at the actual E3 event?
Also, if I'm reading that right, it also says that all three of those games are gonna be showcased as playable demos. Perhaps things are going faster than we thought with dev time...?

I'm not really expecting SSB4 to be one of those demos being showcased around, seeing how secretive Sakurai might get about the whole development. Might just wait for the 3D Mario-games but not SSB.

So I came across this today:

I actually tried checking the official Smash Bros. site, and it didn't show that.

FYI, I didn't find this on 4chan, I found it via this post, commenting on how the try "Japan Time" is returning soon.

Yep, I saw that thread. Someone made that image and manage to fool everyone even the admins into getting hyped for little to no reason. (the only true news is the fact that smash bros. is going to appear before E3)

But anyway, it was because the hype for those Dojo updates that I came to know better about SSB and eventually ended up finding Bitf. So people can't say that nothing can be gained from all the hype.

I think that the altered Smash Bros. symbol should've tipped some people off, especially with the normal one replacing the O in SMASH BROS., like in Brawl, but that's just me.

    Re: SSB4 News Thread

So this is a rumor, and not exclusively Smash-related, but it seems worth posting and I don't know where else to put it:

It's supposedly an outline of the forthcoming Nintendo Direct presentations leading up to and during E3.

The relevant point to this topic (Smash-focused news) is said to be coming on June 11 (3 weeks from today and the opening day of E3, as it were), with footage of SSB4 being shown at a Wii U software showcase (and not the 3DS one, strangely), and then later getting it's own Nintendo Direct conference - with Sakurai talking about the game's new mechanics and the connectivity of the Wii U and 3DS versions. Additional interesting (non-Smash) info includes Pokemon also getting its own Direct, another one focusing on Miyamoto, Retro's game finally being unveiled, and...a metric &&&&ton of Iwata Asks segments. Seriously, damn.

I'm skeptical, of course (especially with all of the Iwata Asks things because really how even?) but it certainly doesn't seem completely improbable. If true, that could be a pretty huge reveal for Smash, and also suggest the possibility of more "Smash Directs" in the future (possibly as a replacement for Dojo updates). This could potentially be pretty exciting if it's legit, and at the very least interesting to speculate about.

Some of the above post is true: The reveal is definitely going to be a trailer, as confirmed by Sakurai via Twitter. Still no word on the 3DS version, but hey, a trailer. That's always cool.

    Re: SSB4 News Thread

Yeah that rumor was definitely wrong

    Oh well

Hooray for getting a trailer (which I expected anyway but confirmation is always nice)

And another bit of info that's not really news but still noteworthy and somewhat humorous: Platinum Games designer and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya told Smash fans to "&&&& off" in response to many asking him about Bayonetta's potential inclusion in SSB4.

Perhaps not an entirely unwarranted statement, but it does come as rude and unprofessional (worth mentioning that this is the same guy who was upset over people drawing porn of Bayonetta, so this isn't the first time he's been at odds with fans of his work). Either way, though, I don't think we'll be seeing Bayonetta in Smash 4 considering this, despite what some rumors have suggested (not that there was much of a chance of it anyway but yeah certainly not now).

Maybe he's just lashing out because people keep asking and he's not allowed to divulge the fact that she IS in the game. Maybe he's just frustrated for having to sit on this secret. Maybe....maybe....

Yeah, I doubt she'll be ine. Kinda fun to think about though.

I lost all respect for the guy when he went out of his way to sexualize Bayonetta heavily but then began attacking people for sexualizing her on their own. He started going on about it being disrespectful or something but he's the guy who wanted cutscenes of her moaning as if she were having sex. (not to mention her design and basically being naked at several points... you thought she WOULDN'T be sexualized by people???)

That said I don't think his reaction is totally unwarranted because Smash fans can be ridiculously overbearing about speculation, but come on man it's twitter what the hell did you expect to happen when the fans can directly contact you?

Actually, and I'm feeling kinda embarrassed for remembering this(Dammit TVTropes!), he didn't have a problem with erotic art, his problem was that many artists made Bayonetta submissive, which kinda goes against her character. Then in response most artists made her more dominant and all was well in the world of stupid porn once again.

That twitter reply is really rude tho'. But then again, the guy is a complete wacko(you don't make games like Bayonetta when sane) and the SSB fanbase can be ungodly annoying.
But yeah, Bayonetta probably won't be in SSB. Can't say I'm surprised seeing how she makes Kratos look like a cat lady in comparison, and I can't say I'm that disappointed either.

Figured this is better here than the other thread. There's a booth for playable Smash in E3 and there's gameplay footage. (skip to 3:41)

First thing I notice is that it's faster than Brawl but slower than Melee. So what I expected. Second, Mario seems to still have FLUDD, so get used to that. Third, no tripping anywhere in sight.

Keep it up and I'll consider this much better than Brawl but never as good as Melee. Then hopefully mods come and make it like Melee.
